📚 Library Use & Borrowing
How long can my child keep library books?
Students may keep their library books for two weeks. Books can be renewed as long as no other students are waiting for them.
What happens if a book is overdue?
We do not charge late fees; however, students must return overdue books before checking out new ones.
Can my child renew a book?
Yes! Renewals are available if the book is not on hold for another student.
Are books ever “on hold” for other students?
Yes. If another student needs a book, your child may be asked to return it by the due date so others can enjoy it too.
💵 Lost or Damaged Books (Related to what you already planned)
What happens if my child’s library book is damaged?
If a book is returned damaged (such as torn pages, water damage, writing, or damage from pets), a fine will be created for the cost of the book.
What happens if my child’s library book is lost?
If a book is marked as lost, a fine will be created.
- If the book is later found and returned in good condition, the fine will be removed.
- If the book cannot be found, the fine will remain.
How can we take care of a library fine?
Families may resolve a fine in one of two ways:
- Pay the fine, or
- Replace the book with the exact same title (same book, not a similar one) if you are able to find a replacement on your own.
Please contact the library before purchasing a replacement to be sure it is an acceptable copy.
How can fines be paid?
Fines may be paid in person at the library by:
- Cash, or
- Check made payable to “McKinley Elementary”
- Please write “Library” in the memo line.
At this time, online payments are not available.
Who is responsible for library books?
Library books are checked out under the student’s account. If a student checks out a book for a friend, the student whose account the book is on is responsible for returning or replacing it.

What if my child forgets to bring their library books to school?
Please help remind your child to bring their books back on library day so they can check out new ones.
Can parents or caregivers borrow books?
Library books are intended for student use only, but families are welcome to read together at home!
What happens if a student changes schools mid-year?
Any library books must be returned before transferring to another school.
🕒 Library Schedule & Access
When does my child visit the library?
Each class has a scheduled library visit once per week or bi-weekly.
Can students visit the library outside their class time?
Students may visit with teacher permission or during designated library hours.
Is the library open before or after school?
The library is open before school.
🎒 Book Selection & Support
How does my child choose books that are right for them?
The librarian helps students select books that match their interests, reading level, and goals.
What if my child needs help finding a book they like?
Absolutely! Helping students discover books they enjoy is one of our favorite things.
Can students request specific books for the library?
Yes! We love student recommendations and do our best to include them when possible.
